Message from the head

Welcome to Kingfisher Special School’s website, Oldham’s Primary School for children with complex and severe learning needs – a place of learning. We hope that the information provided gives you an insight into the practice and provision of the school and the values and vision that underpin our work. At the top of each page are the ‘Learning Links’ of the school to help you navigate your way around.

We continuously develop our provision with a clarity of expectation in terms of high aspirations for the children and underpinning rationales for what we do and why we do it. We put a lot of thought into how we can help children get ready for learning, supported by a clear vision and strong values-set to which we all sign up, and a collaborative ethos – working as a team across school and beyond in partnership with many professionals such as health colleagues.

We aim to get it right for every child – whatever challenges they face. This means giving staff “permission” to think differently – not to feel straight-jacketed by schemes of work or following existing curriculum models; to look to what skills each child needs to learn and then devising a Personalised Learning Plan to best meet those needs. This I think, is what makes us successful – the Kingfisher creative approach to learning – and the children become successful independent learners and achieve in the safe and happy learning environment of Kingfisher.

We are also pleased to share with you the growing reputation of Kingfisher, in terms of the already excellent and continually improving provision of the school, as we further develop the support we offer to children across Oldham and beyond, as one of the first National Teaching Schools and a National Support School. Staff skills and expertise are enhanced through collaboratively developing their professional practice – this results in the children benefitting from all of us reflecting and refining what we do. Our aim is for all children and staff to be safe, happy learners with a vision of endless possibilities, and this underpins all the work of Kingfisher.

With Kind Regards,
