What is PSHE?
PSHE is part of the Wellbeing Aspect at Kingfisher. PSHE supports children to be healthy, active and lead fulfilling lives. Children learn to respond positively to challenges, solve problems, and handle risks and to develop self-confidence.
This area of learning lays the foundations for long term well-being and contributes to children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC).
Children learn about their changing bodies, their place in society both in school and beyond, caring for and looking after their bodies and awareness of acceptable and unacceptable behaviours towards their peers within social situations.
Children also learn about their responsibilities both as individuals and as members of groups and teams and the relationships they form with others.
As they become more confident children develop a growing self-awareness and a commitment to self-improvement so they can make informed decisions that lead to happy and healthy lives. They raise their aspirations, set goals and work to achieve them.
In preparing children for the next stage in life, whether that be the next part of their education or ultimately the work place. Therefore, we do take into account elements of the Citizenship curriculum that Key Stage 3 &4 children will experience. The areas of being responsible and finance are looked at in our Learning and Teaching structure.
What does PSHE look like for the children at Kingfisher?
Children have numerous opportunities to develop vital skills through their everyday experiences which may be planned but also often arise incidentally. Some knowledge and skills will need specific teaching through subject lessons to ensure breadth and depth of learning experience at an appropriate level.
Incidental Skills and Opportunities
- Following routines including classroom routines and personal care routines
- Developing relationships with staff and peers
- Knowing how to keep themselves safe
- Being able to ask for help
- Practising appropriate behaviour in different situations
- Communicating preferences and making choices
- Developing independence through taking on appropriate responsibilities for example, collecting the register
Health and Wellbeing
- What is meant by a healthy lifestyle
- How to maintain physical, mental and emotional health and wellbeing
- How to manage risks to physical and emotional health and well being
- Ways of keeping physically and emotionally safe
- About managing change, such as puberty, transition and loss
- How to make informed choices about health and wellbeing and to recognise sources of help with this
- How to respond in an emergency
- To identify different influences on health and wellbeing
- How to develop and maintain a variety of healthy relationships within a range of social/cultural contexts
- How to recognise and manage emotions within a range of relationships
- How to recognise risky or negative relationships including all forms of bullying and abuse
- How to respond to risky or negative relationships and ask for help
- How to respect equality and diversity in relationships
Living in the Wider World
- About respect for the self and others and the importance of responsible behaviours and actions
- About rights and responsibilities as members of families, other groups and ultimately as citizens
- About different groups and communities
- To respect equality and to be a productive member of a diverse community
- About the importance of respecting and protecting the environment
- About where money comes from, keeping it safe and the importance of managing it effectively
- How money plays an important part in people’s lives
- A basic understanding of enterprise
SMILES and PALS
SMILES is a play based approach to develop children’s social and emotional wellbeing which contributes to the PSHE curriculum at Kingfisher. Classes use this approach as the basis for their PALS session (Play Access to Learning Skills) each week which involves classes meeting together to share play opportunities, develop relationships and learn from each other.
Specific activities relating to PSHE may be included within each classes web page via the ‘How You Can Help At Home’ button; ideas might include:
- Establishing good routines at home
- Exploring the outdoors and enjoying nature
- Participating in regular exercise
- Promoting good personal care routines
- Helping to look after and care for plants, pets and family members
- Encouraging healthy eating choices
- Discussing rights and wrongs within situations and set and maintain boundaries
